Where is the water?

This puppy lives with Ghylaine. Ghylaine Ruest has been owned by Saints for 16 years. Moliere is her third Montmart's Saint Bernard. She lost her big smooth male 6 months ago. Ghylaine is really good with dogs. She takes care of many of her friends dogs when they are on holidays.
She is a good example of great Saint Bernard owner

Yahoo List for Members
If you have not joined the Saint List yet here is the member link.

Hello All,

At the November meeting of the SBFC, a decision was made to create two Yahoo groups. One would be set up for the Executive of the Club to facilitate their communications. This is a good tool for archiving messages and you can go back and check if you’ve deleted something by mistake. The other group is for all members. This should be a great tool in bringing our members from across the country together to share their experiences, their accomplishments and their sorrows. This is a members-only email list and as such is limited to members in good standing of the Saint Bernard Fanciers of Canada and is by invitation only. Invitations were sent out to all the members listed in the last newsletter in mid-November. If you find that you did not get an invitation (or if you weren’t sure what it was and deleted it), just send me an email at gervaisj@mts.net and I’ll send you a new invitation.

You can email the list for advice, information on upcoming shows, and all news that you wish to share. You can also post photos, files, etc. to be shared among the membership. You can post photos of your dogs or dog-related activity by signing on to yahoo and going to your group. The instructions can be found there. It would be a good place to upload files that cover ear cleaning, common problems, tick removal, etc. The list is not moderated at this time so it’s up to each individual to keep it civilized. No bashing will be tolerated. We are a small group so we should be able to get along!

It’s my sincere wish that we all dig in and help this club to become a vibrant, effective vehicle to promote the best breed of dog there is, the Saint Bernard. So, are your ready to share your thoughts? Just bring up your mail and send your message to: StBernardFanciersClub@yahoogroups.com

Don’t forget to give your dogs a hug!

Telephone Report

I have been calling the membership to touch base with everyone.
I have been very impressed with the dedication to our beloved Saints.
It was really nice to be able to throw ideas around.
The Newsletter was a favourite of all I talked to. Denise deserves
a huge Thank You, covered in Saint slobber. She has done a remarkable
job. I have shown our Club Newsletter to other Clubs, to give them an
idea of the high standards they have to aim for.
Several members were unaware of the Club Yahoo List. This can be
a very valuable tool. Members can upload articles, files & pictures as
well as post to the List. I look forward to hearing from everyone.
Perhaps we can start off by introducing ourselves.
I will be calling those I missed last week in the coming week.
Remember, Club Memberships are due, and we need members to step forward
for Nomination to the Executive. We may be small in numbers, in a large
country, far flung from each other, but we owe it to our Saints to work
together, to promote them, comradeship and information.
I have forwarded your ideas on Membership Applications to Sara
and Denise, and Denise will be mentioning it in this Newsletter.
Bye for now,
Irenne Bader

Saint Rescue Update
Trinity of Hope

Hi,
I have been fostering a very, very nice Saint, Norman (Gooby Doo). He turns three in January. He is from California (I have his registration papers). Super temperament. Problem? He has had two TPLO surgeries on his right knee (the vet who did the first TPLO did not use the right screws). I love this boy, I'd love to keep him, but I can't--if I did, I couldn't help other Saints in need. What he needs is a family where someone is home part of the time, kids, he loves them, and maybe other dogs. He is great with other dogs and cats. He is trained on Invisible Fence and physical fence, and he is crate trained, house trained and walks great on a leash. He also knows his name, sit, down, and wait. He also comes with pet insurance (Vet Insurance, $52 per month). Amazing boy, slated for his post-op x-rays the 2nd week of December. Bungalow and fenced yard expected, and yes, an adoption donation since we have put a lot of money into this boy. He'd be an amazing obedience training dog or therapy dog. Super nice guy. Norman is neutered, microchipped, utd on shots, and has had his thyroid tested, on meds, and has been on hw prevention

Krys

PS--he's very handsome.

Tribute to Furrn

With great sadness we had to say goodbye to our Ch Shadowfrost Wite Hot Infurno who we called Furrn on Nov 19th, after a short battle with Osteosarcoma.

3 years ago we adopted her when she was in need to find a new home and she brought great joy to our home.
She quickly became a friend to Monk in the short months until his passing. She was there to bring comfort to our hearts during that sad time. After 4 months she took on the Mother role, when we brought home Oakley. They were never apart from that moment. She was a gentle soul to him even when he would try to get her going and rough house.

Furrn always knew what house to run up to when we would visit Giselle and Gordon those few times of the year that we would travel to Winnipeg. She loved to go for car rides and going for swims even though she would never go into the water past her chest.

She became a champion at the age of 18 months. In October 2008 she was brought out of retirement for a show and took home the ribbon for Best Altered catagory. We got to exprience what a dog show was like from beyond the audience, and it was exciting that we got to do it with Furrn.

Furrn was happy to have a home where she was spoiled. She mostly like to curl up with us on the couch and she would jump into bed with Mike after I had left for work. She always waited until I was gone. She gave us a good laugh at times.

Furrn contributed to raising money for the Purina Guide dog walk. In June 2007 she raised $187.00 and in June 2009 she raised $301.00 being the highest raised amount for that day.

Furrn was cremated and her finally resting place will be with us and with Monk beside her.
She was a giant gentle soul that will be greatly missed. Her and Monk are together again.
Oakley misses you, and we do too! Love Mommy, Daddy, Hayden, Oakley and Calliecat.

Sherri and Mike.

Thank you Giselle for bring her into our lives. She was a joy.

Batteries

Treatment of battery ingestions can be difficult.

The recommendation is to take a radiograph to see where the battery is and whether or not it is intact. If intact we can try emesis or bulking the diet. If in pieces, it has to come out surgically (don't drag it up the esophagus if leaking).

If sure that the battery was swallowed intact, then feed a large, soft meal such as bread or canned dog food and induce vomiting.

If the battery is not vomited,
remove it surgically unless it moves into the small intestine within 8-12 hours (before the stomach acid can erode the battery and allow leakage of the contents).

However, if it is possible or known that the dog bit into the battery, the clinician has three options.

1. Vomiting can be induced following a large, soft meal, but this risks further damage to the esophagus if the battery is leaking.

2. The battery can be left alone for 8-12 hours with the hope that it will move into the small intestine, but this risks damage to the stomach from the leaking contents of the battery.

3. The third option is to surgically remove the battery immediately.

Button batteries are often dismissed because of their small size, but in fact frequently stick to the esophageal wall and cause severe burns.

Lithium batteries are more likely to result in esophageal perforation.

Treating with a mildly acidic solution PO is contraindicated because it will enhance the electric current flow, increasing damage. The best treatment is bolus administrations of water at pH 7.0.

Skin exposure to corrosive agents can result in erythema, edema, intense pain, and ulceration. Make sure to clean off the dog's paws, just in case he held the battery on one while he was chewing on them.

Ingestion of corrosive agents can lead to tissue necrosis and inflammation of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach. Treatment would include dilution (little milk and water) with immediate exposure and then GI protectants (sucralfate slurries.) Watch for pain, food refusal, oral damage. If seen, more aggressive care (antibiotics, pain meds, slurried diet) may be needed.

If punctured they will leak alkaline contents and can cause GI perforation. If ingested on their own, they like to lodge in the esophagus or stomach. The two side of the esophagus can touch the battery and an electric current can be formed resulting in full thickness burns.
